in European Studies
The Master of European Studies (MES) degree is a multi-lingual and interdisciplinary program. Courses are offered in the faculties of Cultural Studies (including Political Science), Law and Economics, from which students may choose their major according to their particular academic interests. The Viadrina provides opportunities for advanced research allowing students to deepen their knowledge in a wide range of subjects in all four disciplines. Students are therefore encouraged to develop their own interests and research projects within the MES program.
The Viadrina offers numerous international exchange programs with 202 partner universities throughout the world in more than 40 different countries giving students an unmatchable opportunity, offered by few other universities, to improve their foreign languages during their master degree. Our new president Dr. Pleuger was the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations and the German Ambassador in Washington D.C The experience Dr. Pleuger brings along with his established connections within the international community can only benefit the Viadrina and its students.
We encourage students to spend as much time as possible during their studies participating in exchange and language programs. The new examination rules from 2008 (see §15 in German) have expanded the number of language certificates to include all possible languages.
We are happy to inform students about our Double-Degree programs in partnership with Adam Mickiewicz University in Posen (Poland) in the faculty of Political Science and Bilgi University in Istanbul (Turkey) in Cultural Studies and Political Science. A new Double-Degree program is being developed with Strasbourg, which would bring the structural and insitutional elements of both the European Parliament and the European Council closer to Viadrina. The Robert-Schuman Université provides internships in the European Union as well as preparation for the EU Concours, a highly competitive program that recruits staff for EU institutions.
The proximity of the Viadrina to Poland and Eastern Europe is also a unique aspect of the university: students can study at the Viadrina on both sides of the German-Polish border of modern Europe as well as enjoy many interesting social activities within and around the university. We offer intensive support in learning, small seminar groups and excellent technical facilities.
