Prof. Dr. Michael Minkenberg is currently holding the Max Weber Chair for German and European Studies at New York University. During his absence, Apl. Prof. Dr.habil. Gert-Rüdiger Wegmarshaus is acting professor of the Chair of Political Science.
Michael Minkenberg, Dr. phil. habil., born in 1959, is professor of political science at European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). Since the 1990s, he has conducte several research projects on the contemporary radical right in Western Europe and the USA, more recently also Central and Eastern Europe, on the relationship between religion and politics in Western democracies, and on issues of migration and xenophobia.
He has studied at the universities in Heidelberg, Freiburg/Br. , Bonn and Cologne, and Georgetown University in Washington DC. He has taught at the universites of Göttingen, Heidelberg and Frankfurt (Oder), as well as Cornell University and Columbia University.
Currently, he is Max Weber Professor for European Studies at New York University's Center for European and Mediterranean Studies.
From 1999 until 2002 and from 2004 until 2007 he was Vice President for International Affairs at European University Viadrina, from 2000 until 2007 he was Speaker of the Section “Comparative Politics” of the German Political Science Association (DVPW). He has been member of the American Political Science Association since 1984. He is also member of the Standing Group „Extremism and Democracy“ in the European Consortium of Political Research (ECPR).He is member of the editorial board of the journal “Comparative European Poitics”.
